Last week I was watching ESPN with my boyfriend, and we caught one of the films on the 30 for 30 series. It was a documentary on Bo Jackson entitled
You Don't Know Bo directed by Michael Bonfiglio. The film was a great presentation of the life and career of Bo Jackson, a legendary athlete who played baseball and football professionally at the same time during the late 80s and early 90s.
I had actually never heard of Bo before the documentary and I found his story fascinating. Watching the famous highlights of his career and hearing about him both personally and professional gave me an interesting viewpoint on this athlete I didn't even know about.
His rise and fall sounded to me like that of a tragic hero from classical mythology. I felt compelled to depict him as Hercules, with his famed bow and arrow, garbed in his athletic regalia.
This image and pose are based on a famous sculpture of Hercules, wearing the pelt of a lion, shooting a poisoned arrow at the Stymphalian Birds.
