Uncommon Objects

Today I went to Austin to have lunch with a friend and shop at Uncommon Objects. Here are some photos of some odd items at this awesome store.

Saturday at the Earth Day Festival

Last Saturday I spent part of the day at the Earth Day Festival at the San Marcos Aquarena Center. It was a beautiful day and the setting was amazing.

Outside My Window

This is another drawing that's part of my "A Day in the Life" series. It is a play between charcoal and pen, two of my favorite materials to use.

It's getting harder and harder to breathe

Wow, the last few days have been absolute madness. Why are ALL DEADLINES in March?? The entire art community wants to have shows during April. Damn them. Anyways, here's an illustration that I pulled together recently. It's a colored digital version of a painting I did a couple years back. I'm using it as a design for Cirque du Soleil's The Beatles LOVE show.

Zooland Crackers

This is the front design for a box of Japanese Zooland crackers. The crackers were pretty good, kinda tasted like Ritz. But I just really enjoyed this illustration. The monkey has this hilarious seductive and somewhat drugged up look.

Old Man

This is a pastel drawing of an old model named Dave.

VooDoo Forest

This is a drawing from a series called VooDoo Forest. This series consists of 5 drawings featuring the same composition, but contains different techniques and materials. This particular drawing is my favorite one from the series. It is a subtraction drawing that I did using charcoal and erasers.

Leda and the Swan

This is an illustration concerning the use of sexuality in art and art history. The female nude is a constant theme throughout the history of art. I chose to reinvent Leonardo's classical painting Leda and the Swan by exploring the use of the nude and the extremely sexual nature of the original work. The story goes that Zeus turned himself into a swan in order to seduce a woman named Leda. After being together she laid two eggs from which two sets of twins were born.

Scare Bears: We Scare A Lot

This is a redesign of the classic Care Bears that I have lovingly named the Scare Bears. There is the Caffeine bear, the Emo bear, the Redneck bear, and the Hobo bear. I'm using them as illustrations for an article about kids growing up too fast.

My Day Out

Today was a busy day full of art and exploring. First I got great feedback on my portfolio from my cousin Fran. Then I walked around Uptown and eventually made my way to the Dallas Museum of Art where I got to check out their Impressionists exhibit. The museum wasn't crowded at all so I was able to look at every piece at my leisure and it was wonderful. It was just the kind of day that I needed.

Austin Capitol

This is a quick sketch I did of the Austin Capitol last summer. It was pretty hot that day so I just drew quickly and got out of there.

Pirate Painting

This is a gouache painting on black foam core of a guy dressed as a pirate. The lighting was pretty dramatic and I tried to capture that in my depiction.

Cosmo in the Afternoon

This is a charcoal drawing of my adorable cat Cosmo. Even though he is a bit of a silly uncoordinated bastard, he is undeniably cute.

Give Me A Break

Here are a few pics of some awesome green tea KitKats from Japan I got courtesy of my friend Erika. Not only are they packaged quite nicely, they are very light and tasty.

Good for Grasshopper

Right now I'm getting ready for my second Good for Grasshopper Portfolio Workshop. Good for Grasshopper is a great student resource for design students. These are a couple of illustrations I did for the website.

Monday Morning

From that same series "A Day in the Life" this is Monday Morning. This is actually the first drawing in the series and plays with negative and positive space.

Leave Me Alone

This is a drawing I did for a series entitled "A Day in the Life." It's of a pretty dingy, sketchy-looking couch that resides in one the girls' bathroom of my Art building. It is done in pen and ink and watercolor.

This is an ad I did for Toys for Toys using cut paper.

This is a short animation I did for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day.

Just Another Day Animation

This is a short animation that I've been working on called "Just Another Day." It is a story of a normal day that ends up in an unusual way. It’s just another boring typical day in my life until I go with a friend to a Viking reenactment practice. At first I’m confused and skeptical about being there. But, as I see the fighting and meet the people, I become really interested and impressed. After joining the practice and hanging out with them afterwards, I wake up the next morning and discover I’ve been initiated into the group.

This short film contains both hand-drawn and photographic elements that were compiled in
Adobe Flash CS4. Currently, I have only begun to animate the drawings. Therefore only the first 9 seconds are animated. It isn't exactly finished, but I plan on completing it soon.
